January Wrap Up – CONSISTENCY is the Word of the Month

1 Feb

It is officially February 1st……WTF??? WHERE did January go?! I’m seriously flabbergasted and am DEMANDING a refund on some of my days! Doesn’t work that way???? Crap….

Ok – well I’m going to then take this moment to recap the month. Because lets be honest….January didn’t go QUITE the way I planned. In fact, it went to hell in a hand basket. Or as my sister’s mother-in-law told me…it went to the bear. And she’s right. January went to the bear. Some days I could fight the bear off, but majority of those days the bear got me.

Stupid. Bear.

As with most Januarys, we all start off with grand ideas of what we’re going to do in the new year. I didn’t categorize mine as resolutions. I put them as goals. Set things I had planned for my year. A LOT of different things (13 races in 2013, 1000 miles in 2013, eating healthier, working out more, streaking (thats 1 mile a day not naked!), etc.

When I started planning this post I thought I was going to be talking about a bunch of failures or missteps (and believe me there definitely quite a few!), but when I look at what I really accomplished this month I’m more proud of myself than anything.

This month was a huge part of my training for Austin Marathon which is on February 17th. It included completion of the 1st in my 13 in 2013 race series, the Carlsbad Half Marathon. You can check out my race recap here.  Most importantly though it was about me GETTING OUT and running consistently. When I trained for NWM (my first full) I was transitioning into a brand new job. A job which had me on my feet all day long. I wasn’t used to doing that AND running the miles. So I would get out MAYBE once during the week and then out for my long run.

For Austin – I am determined to get used to going out 2-3 times a week, plus my long run. And I’ve been able to do that! YAY! Go me! It’s my birthday! The beginning of the month saw me getting out almost 3-4 times a week plus a long run, but as the miles increased I’ve taken it back to 2-3 times a week and the other days I’m cross training (elliptical, walking, etc.) This helped me reach a first time accomplishment…..Over 100 MILES logged in January! (116.77 miles to be exact!) WHAT?!

I cannot begin to tell you how STOKED I am on this. it means I met the first months goal toward my overall goal of 1000 miles in 2013! It means, that while I may not have been as consistent in my nutrition as I wanted to this month (stupid emotional downfalls I hate you), I didn’t let it get me off track on my running.

My biggest takeaways from this month….do NOT let myself get so down on myself when I have a day or two that is not as successful as I had hoped. Because every day is a challenge. A part of the JOURNEY. I got the below from a fellow runner on Facebook – RUNinspired

Truth – I am NOT working out today. I HAVE eaten potato chips and Doritos the last 2 days. I am NOT ashamed to admit this. Today I choose to be completely GUILT FREE. Why? Changing your entire lifestyle is damn ass hard. It’s blood, sweat and tears. It’s dedication. It’s persistence. It’s day after day proving to YOURSELF that you’re worth it. It’s changing not only your BODY but your MIND. It’slosing friends along the way who don’t “get it”. Maybe even a few family members. It’s finding yourself. It’s MAKING time when there is none. It’s 11pm running… 4am cardio… insane gym time… DVD’s… salads… extra protein… DOMS… sore arms, jello legs and a crazy love of pain you NEVER thought you’d experience. This shit takes TIME. Weight is not gained overnight and WILL NOT come off overnight. Keep up the workouts. Eat clean. Keep it healthy as much as humanly possible. SWEAT. Drink WATER like its your damn job. A few bad food choices won’t undo all your hard work. It won’t make you magically GAIN 50 pounds. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Get up and keep going. KILL your workouts. Work a little harder. Life goes on. It won’t end because of a few slip ups. Keep your chin up and keep FIGHTING. We got this shit ❤

So for February i strive to remember these things. To continue the consistency in my runs and to fight for consistency in my nutrition. Knowing that I am not perfect and I will never be anyone else’s definition of perfect. I will always be just perfectly ME 🙂

How did YOUR January go? What are your takeaways? February goals? Inspire me!

Great job on getting the miles in! Logging over 100 miles in a month is awesome!
